CHAPTER 1: The Contract. A Young Prince's Journey.

“Where are we going, Father?” a timid voice called out as he was dragged by his arm into the Offerings' Chamber.

“Where your fate is to be sealed, you monster!” replied King Avarice the Second, ruler of Drecantar, to his youngest son.

The boy, Mirowe Yucain, the youngest son of the line, shook with fear. His Father had beaten him before, after one of the nobility in the court complained that he had looked him in the eyes. His older brothers tried to protect him from this cruelty afterwards, but today, they had run out of such luck. Mirowe was to be sent away, under contract, to the Territory of Travescha, under the rule of one fearsome Daemon Lord.

“Sorceress? Where are you?! Start the ceremony at once! I can stand the presence of this abomination no longer. Neither can the Queen! Away with him!” demanded the King.

“Tsk, tsk, Avarice Yucain the Second. Have some patience, Mouse.” Long, curly pink hair swished, as Sorceress Seraphina Aurelea manifested into the room. Green eyes stared coldly at the King.

“Are you absolutely certain you want to go through with this, Avarice?” asked the Sorceress, who had taken the form of an adolescent. “You know that if I do this he will never be able to return here again in his lifetime.”

“Of course I am certain. We've kept him for long enough. I want him gone!”

“Then it shall be done.” Her eyes saddened as she looked at the small boy. Mirowe was shaking uncontrollably with tears running down his face. His red eyes stared at her with such fear, fear that the King had placed there. And fear of her.

“Come here, Mirowe.” Mirowe jumped as he heard his name.

“Go on you stupid boy!” the King shoved his son towards her. Mirowe stumbled and fell. He got to his knees and tried to plead with the Sorceress, but his intense fear had rendered him mute.

The Sorceress crouched down and took Mirowe's left hand. With an ornate dagger, she slashed his palm and let his blood drip onto the magic circle beneath them that had manifested with her arrival.

“I am sorry,” she whispered.

“O Somnus Lord Dasfeir, I summon thee. Take this gift of blood. Bind him. Bind him under contract. Once he leaves, he is to never return here again, for as long as he breathes. If contract is breached may death befall him...”

Mirowe could only stare mutely at the Sorceress... Oh how cruel his fate had become.

“My task is over, Avarice. I hope you are happy for what you have done!” With an icy air, the Sorceress vanished from the room.

“Hn, contemptuous witch. Come boy! You leave here immediately!” Once more, he dragged his son away by the arm. This time, Mirowe did not put up a fight. He let himself be taken, like a rag doll, as he fell unconscious.

*

When Mirowe came to, his hand had been bandaged. He was in a carriage that was clipping and clopping its way to the Territory of Travescha. The only thing on the boy's mind was that he had missed his last chance to say goodbye to his brothers and sister.

Mirowe looked sullenly at his bandaged hand. He knew instantly it was the work of his big sister Raena. She must've cried to see him leave. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that he was unconscious. He didn't need to see their sad faces as they waved him goodbye.

Silently, tears streamed down his face.

Even King Avarice could not be bothered to accompany him to Travescha. In his place, he had sent his court's Chief Ambassador with him. Fortunately for Mirowe, the ambassador was Gromme Manet, one of the nobles who didn't care for superstitions and certainly not for red-eyed serpent spirits named Uvalea. He was a 'man of science', as he so frequently proclaimed.

“Hi there. You're finally awake” the kindly looking bespectacled Wolf stroked Mirowe's head.

“Here,” the man offered his handkerchief, “you should dry your eyes, were almost at the castle.”

Mirowe had not noticed it, but they had already crossed the border and most of the city. The small boy accepted the handkerchief and blew his nose onto it. He handed it back to Gromme but the man told him to keep it, “Something to remember me by” he said.

“You know, I've heard a lot about you from your brother,” commented the Ambassador. Mirowe only looked confusedly at him.

“I'm your brother, Hevstor's tutor.”

“Oh,” came the boy's monosyllabic reply. Yes, he recalled, brother Hevstor did mention a Professor Manet.

“Each of your siblings also left me a message. Adsorren says to stay healthy and never give up hope. Hevstor says don't get tied down by whatever they try on you. Typical of him. Raena says... to wear warm clothing, for some reason... and Raelter says.... well... actually, Raelter didn't say anything... he just stormed off when told you were being sent away... Wasn't even there to see you off...”

Mirowe nodded. That's Raelter for you. And typical of Raena to think just of clothing.

“Oh, it seems we've arrived,” quipped Gromme as he looked out the carriage's window.

Mirowe followed the man's eyes out the window. He could see a large castle looming over them. The carriage's driver had already dismounted and opened the carriage door. Gromme hesitated getting out. He looked at Mirowe for a moment and seeing the boy's sad face, gave him a hug.

“Come on,” he said, wiping away a stray tear on the boy's face. Mirowe only nodded.

As they entered the Castle's doors, a minister came to see them. Requesting for the papers that proved his status as Ambassador, Gromme gave them to him. They were then allowed to enter and have their meeting with Lord Shaen Mizura. As they entered, they could see a powerful Daemon seated on the large throne at the back of the hall. Gromme could make out a head of golden hair with two large curled horns on both sides of his head. A truly magnificent being... and a fearful one. One can only pray for the safety of Prince Mirowe... he thought.

“Your Highness, Lord Shaen Mizura.” Gromme kneeled on the floor and gestured Mirowe to follow his action. They only rose when the Lord addressed for them rise.

“I am the Chief Ambassador, Gromme Manet of Drecantar, as you should know. We have sent an envoy recently with the documents for a peace treaty and I gathered you have received them. I am here today to finalize that treaty.”

The Lord only nodded.

“Yes, I have brought an offering with me as gift of peace. Here is the...” he hesitated, “... youngest Prince of the Yucain Family, Mirowe Yucain.”

Mirowe stepped forward. The Lord eyed him indifferently with his dark green eyes.

Once again, the Lord nodded. “James.,” he called out, and a cinnamon haired feline made his presence beside him. “Take him with you and show him the Harem's Quarters.”

“Yes, sir,” the feline bowed.

Mirowe followed the feline with one last glance at Gromme and the Lord.

“Very well, Ambassador Manet. As I have accepted him, it means that the treaty has been finalized. You are now free to go.”

“Yes, Lord.” Gromme turned to leave but hesitated. “Lord Shaen, sir?”

“Yes, Ambassador?” the Lord drummed his fingers.

“If... and I am saying this with the utmost respect to your security, sir, if the boy ever runs away, please, please do not let him return to Drecantar.”

“And why is that, Ambassador?”

“Oh, were you not informed of the circumstances of which Mirowe is bound to his contract?” Gromme looked genuinely surprised. “I would have thought it was written in the documents...”

“Go on Wolf. What circumstances? More importantly, what contract?

“He should very well know of this himself, but I know how foolish the young can be. He is bound under a contract, sealed by the Sorceress – yes that Sorceress – and he is never able to set foot in Travescha again, as long as he lives. If he tries to come back, death will befall him...”

“Is that so...” the Lord looked contemplative, “Very well, I will do what I can if such a day ever comes. You have my word, Ambassador.”

“Yes, sir. Thank you for considering it.” Gromme bowed and left. There was nothing else he could do here.

*

“Hmm... I knew a gift was offered... but I didn't think it would be in the form of this...” the feline hummed, sizing up Mirowe. They had been walking down multiple hallways now, and had come to a stop in the east wing of the castle.

Mirowe looked at his feet. The Cat was intimidating and it absolutely terrified him.

“What, cat got your tongue? Why yes, I would definitely like to sample a taste...”

Mirowe shrunk into himself. He had had practice with the nobles who tried this on him. Scare tactics... well, they definitely work...

“Little princy-poo's no fun...” the feline scorned. “Put up a little fight, you spineless Mouse. You're nowhere close to those nobility I see every day, much less a Prince.” His sneering went on.

He's... He's just like Raelter... He scorns, he spits. But does he really mean it...? Tears came to Mirowe's eyes once again, at the thought of his brother.

“Oh, now he cries,” the feline rolled his eyes. Mirowe just hung his head. “What are you, mummy's boy? So weak he can't even put up with a few insults. I've had enough of you.” the feline dragged Mirowe away by his arm. They reached one of the ornate wooden doors in the east wing, the Harem's Quarters. The feline pulled it open and pushed Mirowe unceremoniously into it.

“Here's your room. I am the leader of the Harem. Name's James Edwards. I don't want any trouble from you, so don't try anything. If any harm comes to the rest of the Harem and I hear it's from you, you're getting reported to Lord Shaen immediately. Understood? I won't stand for little pampered princes.”

“Yes, sir...” came Mirowe's reply.

“Don't try to be funny with me,” With a slam of the door, the feline left Mirowe alone in the room.

“... but I wasn't trying to be funny...” the poor Mouse mumbled to himself.

Mirowe laid down on the soft bed. He tried hard not to think about his situation too much. I'm in the Lord's harem...? Will I be required to... 'service' people...? He didn't want to think about it... Out of sheer exhaustion, Mirowe closed his eyes and drifted off.

The next thing he remembered was a dip in his bed as someone sat down on his right side. It was about mid-afternoon. Opening his bleary eyes, he shifted over to see who was sitting on his bed. His eyes caught sight of a golden head with two magnificent curling horns on either side of the head. Kindly, but sad green eyes looked at him. It took him a moment to realise who it was.

“Lord Mizura, sir!” Mirowe squeaked, trying to bury himself under the covers.

“Hi... I seem to have that effect on people when they first meet me...” the Lord mumbled.

“Oh, no sir! I was just surprised...” Mirowe blushed.

“How are you doing, then?” the Lord inquired. “And please,” he continued, “call me Shaen.” But after seeing confused look on Mirowe's face, added, “or if you prefer, Lord Shaen.” This seemed acceptable to Mirowe, so he nodded.

“I am fine, sir,” Mirowe answered the first question.

Shaen caught sight of Mirowe's bandaged hand and picked it up. This startled Mirowe, but he dared not take his hand back. The Lord was quiet. Then he spoke, “What happened?”

“I... this... My contract, sir.” Mirowe thought better than to lie to the Lord.

“... an offering of blood then...?” came Shaen's quiet question.

“Yes, sir.”

“Which deity was it? Efreena? Uvalea? ...Dasfeir?

“The last one, sir.” Mirowe answered quietly. “And sir...? Uvalea is cursed... we would not worship a god such as he.” Mirowe looked away. He didn't know if he could hold his tears in.

“I'm sorry if I've brought up any bad memories...” Dasfeir was it? There may be hope for you yet, Mirowe.

“No sir, don't be sorry... It's not your fault...”

No, but I certainly know who is at fault here. “Mirowe?” Shaen asked.

“Yes, sir?”

“You can stop being so formal around me, you know. I may look fearsome... and you may have heard stories, but I'm not like that. I care for every one of my citizens and you have come into my 'posession' – I only use that term loosely – so I am tasked to protect you. As the Lord, it is my duty.”

“Yes, sir.” I won't be fooled, sir.

“... Mirowe...” the Lord's eyes saddened. “I know, you don't believe me. That's alright. Took most of the harem more than a few months – up to years – to come around.”

They were both silent for a while, until Mirowe broke the silence with an almost inaudible question.

“Lord Shaen, sir? It might seem a silly question... but... does being in the harem... mean I need to... to... 'service' people...?” Mirowe looked about to cry.

“Oh, goodness no, Mirowe. Didn't James tell you? He should know better. He was the first... – I'm trailing off, aren't I? – no, Mirowe, you're not in the harem to preform such acts. I know I call it the harem, but it is for abused slaves and homeless children, really. I get all kinds of offerings, and most of the time, they arrive as you, slave offerings for peace and such. I didn't really have a place to put them, gifting them to my nobles was just plain wrong... so I set up a 'harem'. That way, I could keep them and look after them. They need not worry about anything here, and I let them heal. Unfortunately, some never heal...” his voice quietened. “Anyways, I encourage, um, 'interaction' among my 'slaves' with whomever they choose as long as they consent to it and there are feelings involved -”

“Um, sir?” Mirowe felt the need to correct him. “Forgive me for interrupting, but I am not a slave, sir...”

Shaen looked at Mirowe like he had grown a second head. The boy is standing up to me? He then burst into almost hysterical laughter. Seeing the cute pout of the Mouse, he couldn't help but laugh.

“I'm sorry Prince Mirowe,” he said after he had stilled his laughter. “It's just the way you carry yourself and the way you speak. You seemed so... acquiescent, I had forgotten your true status...” I wonder what made you that way though...

“You don't need to call me that... Prince... y'know...”

“Alright, Mirowe. I need to have a word with a certain feline about his duties and conduct,” Shaen patted Mirowe's head. “Dinner is at seven sharp. I suggest you clean up and change. There are some clothes in your closet. See you then.”

Mirowe nodded and Lord Shaen left the Mouse to his own devices. He had matters to see to regarding his feline companion.

*

“James? Where are you?” Shaen called out for the feline.

“Yessir?” The feline came out from one of the Harem's Quarters' rooms. He had been playing chess with a 10 year-old feline and was losing rather badly, so he was glad for the distraction. Unfortunately, Lord Shaen seemed furious.

“Did you not inform our new addition of the reason and purpose of which the harem was established?”

Edwards flushed. Why is he mad at me? “Why should I humour little princy-poo? He should go and 'service' some 'clients'! It's good and humbling for a pampered Prince!”

“James Edwards! You know nothing of the boy and yet here you are saying such things about him. I suggest getting to know him before you criticise him!”

“Why are you so protective of him all of a sudden? What's he to you? You warmin' up to him juz cause he's a Prince? 'S'that it? Because you're on the same level? That he ain't inferior, like me...?! A common street rat?” Edwards' voice wavered. He tended to fall back to his old way of speaking when he got emotional. His grey eyes were tearing up. He let the tears flow.

“... Edwards... I didn't mean it that way... Give him a chance. See the real 'him', not the 'him' that you think he is. Please?”

“No. I don't believe you! I won't!” Edwards ran out the room and down the hallway. He wanted to get as far away from Shaen as he could. Shaen did not follow him. He knew he needed to give the feline some space and time to calm down. Why would he be jealous? He's been with me for the longest. He should know where my feelings lie... Today is just getting worse and worse...

*

Edwards still hadn't come around at dinner and he was found pouting at the fountain in the garden as the sun set behind him. Shaen was worried about his charge and went to the garden to see if he could somehow come to an understanding with the feline.

“James... come to dinner...”

“No.”

“James... You know where my feelings lie -”

“Do I?” Edwards interrpted. “I don't think I know anymore...”

“I'm sorry, but Mirowe won't come between us. I won't let that happen. It's not about him being a Prince, or you having lived on the streets, I love you, not the Mouse. He needs protection and care, but it is not my place to tell you why. You'll have to ask him. So, please. Come to dinner...” Not many have seen the Lord so anguished before. Those peeking at the windows felt they were intruding at a personal moment, but they couldn't tear their eyes away. Most were members of the harem and felt that their new companion was not to be trusted if he could separate their Leader from their Lord. They made a resolve not to trust the Mouse.

“Oh, stop groveling. It's not becoming for a Daemon Lord. I'll come to dinner...”

The look on Shaen's face brightened instantly.

“That doesn't mean I've forgiven you. I've just merely considered trying to get along with princy-poo, so don't get your hopes up just yet!”

“That's fine enough for me!” Shaen's smile made everyone want to break into smiles too. At least some semblance of peace had returned to the inhabitants of the Castle.
